Symptoms and Signs of Covid-19

Most Covid symptoms manifest 2 to 14 days after exposure. The symptoms are classified into mild signs, moderate symptoms, and severe symptoms. The time after exposure and before showing covid symptoms is known as the incubation period (where the virus is beginning to replicate rapidly). A person can also transmit the virus through presymptomatic transmission during this stage. The common signs and symptoms of the virus include:

Other symptoms that people with coronavirus are likely to experience include:

Also, remember, symptoms and their severity of COVID-19 can vary greatly from person to person. Some people will show few or no symptoms, while others will show worsened symptoms. Other people will show no signs at all but still have the virus.

Difference between COVID-19 and the common Flu

COVID-19 and Influenza (flu) are infectious diseases which attack the respiratory system of its host. However, the viruses are spread by different pathways. Influenza is caused by the influenza virus, while coronaviruses cause COVID. While both diseases share similar symptoms, COVID-19 is more easily spread and can causes more severe illness in people than influenza. It can also take longer before people begin showing COVID-19 signs compared to the flu. Because some of the symptoms of coronavirus and influenza are similar, it may be challenging to differentiate the diseases, and testing alone may be helpful to confirm a diagnosis.

Priority Testing and At Risk Individuals

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), individuals under the following categories should be tested:

Individuals with COVID symptoms
Individuals who have been exposed to people who have tested positive for the disease (5-7 days after exposure)
Those with no symptoms but are considered a priority by health departments and doctors
Individuals who have taken part in large gatherings and crowded indoor settings

Keep in mind that not everyone with COVID-19 shows symptoms. Always check with a doctor or nurse if you’re feeling unwell to determine if a test is necessary.
